13 ENVIRONMENT PROJECT IDEAS TO BENEFIT YOUR COMMUNITY AND BEYOND

       Greetings, Lions, and Leos!

The District Environment Committee (members listed below) is pleased to invite you to come with us on a journey of discovery as we
learn how each of us can really make “Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.” part of our daily activities and not just a catchy slogan. We believe
personal choices in almost every area impact the environment.
The committee will strive to provide relevant resources on how our individual lifestyles impact our environment, offer practical tips on
changes each of us may adopt to improve our own environment and slow the negative impact of climate change and suggest projects
that clubs may want to participate in. We hope we will be able to convince you that positive change can come from the many small
shifts in our behavior that each of us makes.

13 ENVIRONMENT PROJECT IDEAS TO BENEFIT YOUR COMMUNITY AND BEYOND:
       1. Park/ playground/street / green space cleanup (tried and true project). Look for litter beyond the park, too. Thrash that isn’t sent
to a landfill or recycled often ends up in a stream or in the sewage system.
       2. Volunteer to clean and repaint benches in parks.
       3. Encourage Recycling. Donate recycling bags or replace broken bins.
       4. Senator Roxanne Persaud is donating Rain Barrels. Register at https://forms.gle/KA53GVdNz1uwGomUA to get one. Use in our
community gardens for irrigation and help create water-smart gardens.
       5. Organize an anti-plastic bags campaign.
       6. At club/district events, appoint “recycling champions” who will ensure that trash is in the right bin.
       7. Start a Wednesday Walk or a Saturday Strides (or your choice of day) group.
       8. Promote “Reduce. Reuse. Recycle” by hosting a Garage Sale or a Clothing Swap.
       9. Recycle athletic shoes.
       10. Invite the Disaster Preparedness Committee to share information and prepare a specific emergency preparedness plan for your
          community.
       11. How does composting benefit the environment/community? Create a composter for our community gardens (perhaps you can
collaborate with other clubs) to turn food waste into compost. Organize a food waste collection campaign among club members, or
neighbors to help advance NYC’s community-wide food waste collection initiative.
       12. You can start a small glass recycling business right out If you have space in a garage or in your backyard to offer to the club,
consider recycling glass. Glass is one of the most lucrative and easy-to-find items to recycle. Consider donating the funds to an
entity such as Prospect Park, Brooklyn Botanical Garden, or Queens Botanical Garden.
13 Plant trees. Consult your local environment authorities or parks department to determine the type and number of trees wished for,
as well as the location for planting.
Also, check out facebook.com/groups/district20k1environment/ for articles regarding many aspects of climate change and tips to help you
make positive changes in your environment.
