CHILEAN authorities have taken precautionary measures
by raising the alert level for the Villarrica volcano to “orange,”

the second-highest level, following a gradual increase in
volcanic activity. Villarrica stands as one of the most active
volcanoes in South America, with its summit reaching an
elevation of 2,847 meters (9,340 feet). The last significant

eruption of this stratovolcano occurred in 2015.

In response to the heightened volcanic activity, officials
have initiated evacuation procedures for approximately 30

families residing within an 8-kilometer (5-mile) radius from
the volcano’s crater. Additionally, access to the immediate
vicinity of the volcano will be restricted.
As a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the

local population, schools in the nearby towns of Pucón
and Villarrica will remain closed for five days, during which
students will receive their education through online plat-
       forms.

Villarrica, located 750 kilometers to the south of the capital,
Santiago, has maintained its volcanic activity for a stag-
gering 650,000 years, with close to 50 eruptions recorded

       since the 16th century. This cone-shaped, snow-capped
volcano not only captivates the attention of scientists but
also serves as a popular destination for climbers and skiers.

In light of the heightened alert status, a national park situated
on the slopes of the volcano has been temporarily closed to
