Attribute phrases to different lingüists
Activity 1.4
3. In this phrase 3rd I can say, it belong to Michael Halliday. Because, the base of
the theory begin in his moment of life, when he was learning and teaching Chinese
language, beside his theory is leaning to the functional theory, in the document
Halliday affirms that: “The variables that determine the registration of a given text
are the field (the subject in question, what the people involved refer to in terms of
experience, real or imaginary), mode (the communication channel, for example,
written or spoken, or, more delicately, a textbook, a sermon, a conversation, an
email, etc.) and tenor (the relationship between interlocutors, for example,
symmetrical, as between friends, or asymmetric, as between a boss and an employee
, a teacher and a student).”
6. In my humble opinion, I consider the phrase 6th belong to Michael Halliday,
because he mention the different ways you can use the language to communicate
something. A key word that he says is that we have the register, these are the
linguistics election we have with a particular topic.
Based on the second text ‘Linguistics’ in Bauer, Laurie; “The Linguistic Student’s
Handbook” answer the following question: why is Linguistics definitely
considered a science? In your answer, involve the other language areas such as
semiotics, philology and literature.
Linguistics is the Science of Language, it is considered to be a science since 1916.
Linguistics is defined as a science that studies the structure of natural languages and
the knowledge that speakers have of them.
Semiotics is a language that has a system of signs that express ideas and, for that reason,
it is comparable to writing, the alphabet of the deaf-mute, symbolic rites, forms of
courtesy, military signs, etc. It is simply the most important of these systems. It can be
conceived as a science that studies the life of signs within the framework of social life.
Philology is a scientific movement, whose object of study is not only language but also
the fixation, interpretation and comment of texts, which leads it to deal with literary
history, customs, etc.
