VNSNY Hospice and Palliative Care
Family Support Services
VNSNY Hospice Family Support services provide help and
comfort for families facing end-of-life issues by coordinating
the services of spiritual care counselors, social workers,
volunteers and bereavement counselors. These experts
are specially trained to help families navigate the complex
emotional, psychological, and life changes that result from
serious illness.
• Spiritual care counselors assess spiritual needs and
encourage family to discuss concerns, address questions
and offer religious prayers and ritual as requested
• Social workers help people cope with stress, family
pressures, financial obligations, home care issues and grief
• Volunteers are trained to provide companionship, life
review assistance, organizational help, art at the bedside,
communicating compassion through touch, caregiver
respite, friendly phone calls and visits
• Bereavement counselors provide specialized services
to help families cope with the loss of a loved one for
13 months after death including one-on-one counseling,
and support groups in English, Spanish and Chinese
