Preface

As the global demand for Nursing professionals is increasing, the Nursing Department of UMY in
collaboration with the Language Training Center (LTC) UMY is committed to catering to the needs of Nursing
students in developing their communication skills in English. Communication skill is prominently crucial for
nurses as their job involves bridging communication to many parties; the patient and the family, peer health
professionals, and even society when they are serving their role as community educator. Underlying this
urgency, this module is thus initiated.

Fundamental Communication in Nursing covers the two most vital skills when nurses perform their duties
during Patient Admission and Plenary Sessions. Each respective skill competence is deconstructed into
detailed language features to successfully function their English in the related forms of information
exchange; i.e. Patient Admission includes skills to handle patient appointment, upon arrival, and patient
handover while Plenary Sessions include skills to participate in a focus group discussion and mini-
conference. Upon the completion of the course, students are expected to be enriched with authentic
communication practices among healthcare professionals. Hence, the gap between their nursing skills and
English communication skills is reduced if not resolved.

Lastly, the team would have never begun the endeavor of completing this module without the authority
and supervision of the Language Training Center (LTC) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. It’s been
a great honor and a valuable learning process for us, and for that, we highly appreciate the kind opportunity
given. The team would also give great acknowledgment to all scholars, websites, and other contributors
whose works are cited and adapted during the completion of the module. Without the stimulus of these
materials, this module will not be completed.
