Card 3: First Day at Class

It’s your first day in a class. You don’t know anyone. You sit next to a classmate and start a

small talk to get to know them.

You should:

• Introduce yourself
• Ask about the person’s background (e.g. studies, reason for taking the major)
• Find something in common

• Express interest

Card 4: Meeting a Neighbor

Your neighbor has just had a baby and is out on the street for the first time. Congratulate
her and initiate some small talk.

You should:

• Greet and congratulate her

• Ask about the baby
• Share a kind or personal remark

• Offer support or connection

Card 5: Meeting your teacher

You are shopping and see your English language teacher. Greet him/her and make small
talk.

You should:
• Greet your teacher politely

• Mention where you are or what you’re doing

• Ask a friendly question (about their day, shopping, etc.)
• Refer to class or a recent lesson briefly
