Words to Give Reasons
When giving opinions, it is better if it is followed by reasoning. Here are the words commonly used when
giving reasons.
Words Meaning and Example
✓ Because ... “Because” sentences are more focused on the reason rather than the result.
Example: I didn’t attend the class because I was sick.
✓ Because of ... ” Because of” is a two-word preposition meaning ‘as a result of’:
Example: Because of the rain, the tennis match was stopped. Or the tennis
match was stopped because of the rain.
✓ As ... “As” and “Since” are used similarly. They focus more on the result of a

Example: she is unhappy since/her friends bully her. Or Since/As her friends
bully her, she is unhappy.
✓ For ... ’For” focuses on providing a reason or explanation for a particular situation or
action. It is similar to ”Because”, but it’s a bit more formal.
Example: His parents gave a standing ovation, for he won the Math
Competition.
