2 Parade of Reasons
How to do the activity:
1. Make a group of five students.
2. Group 1 stands forming a line in front of the class.
3. The teacher shows the first student a flashcard with a question asking for opinions.
4. After reading the content of the card, the first student states his/her opinion and gives a reason
using the word ’because’. The second student answers using ’because of’, the third student uses
’as’, the fourth student uses ’for’, and the fifth student uses ’since’.
5. Group 2 performs, etc.
6. The teacher pays attention to the usage of the expressions and gives feedback on the sentences.
3 Talk Show: Are you convinced?
1. In a group of three, act out these scenarios.
2. The teacher decides the scenario for each group.
3. Each group has 5 (five) minutes to prepare for the presentation and perform for 5 (five) minutes.
4. The scenarios are as follows:
a. A representative of a campus magazine interviews a doctor and a nutritionist on the benefits of
self-prepared food. One student acts as the campus reporter, two others act as the doctor and
nutritionist.
b. A mother has a conversation with two of his son’s professors to know which is better for his son;
find a job or pursue another degree. One student acts as the mother, two others act as the
academic advisor and thesis supervisor.
c. A student of the English education department is writing a paper and interviews two stay-at-
home mothers with university degrees to learn whether their education is wasted or beneficial
for their role. One student acts as the student, two others act as the stay-at-home mothers.
d. A psychology professor is doing a research on students’ mental illness and interviews two
students to learn which is more favourable for students; to hang out in cafes or doing outdoor
activities. One student acts as the professor, two others are the students being interviewed.
