Read a dialogue between a nurse and a doctor below. Discuss the answer of the questions with your partner
after you read the dialogue.
Dr. Nicky : Nurse Lily, I’ve been looking for you since this morning. I need to talk to you about Mrs. Mayhill
condition.
Nurse Lily : Yes, Doctor Nicky. What is it?

Dr. Nicky : Have you checked the data from the chest x-ray test from Mrs. Mayhill? That looks pretty bad to
me. Her lungs appear much larger than in normal condition. I think it could be from emphysema.
Don’t you think so?
Nurse Lily : Actually, I was hoping to talk to you about that. Mrs. Mayhill said that she had had chest pain
and short breath previously. I think it’s getting worse now. Sometimes, she was coughing
continuosly. She said that the pain in her chest was so severe.

Dr. Nicky : Did she produce a lot of mucus when she was coughing? I
think we need to give her different antibiotics. The one that
we use now doesn’t seem effective.
Nurse Lily : But I think we need need to do an additional test before that.
I don’t it’s emphysema. We need to be more careful.
Dr. Nicky : What do you mean?

Nurse Lily : She showed some symptoms of emphysema but I’m not so
sure about that. She used to smoke before. She said that she
had had pneumonia two years ago. Nowadays, she said that
she took aspirin everyday for her arthritis.
Dr. Nicky : How do you think she is doing today?
Nurse Lily : On my assessment, Mrs. Mayhill may have only bronchitis. The cause of her chest paint maybe

because of different causes. She said that she had fallen down from the stairs last week. It may
cause the pain in her chest.
Dr. Nicky : Do you think we should get the HRCT scanning to make it sure that it’s emphysema?
Nurse Lily : Yes, I think it’ll be better if we do that. If that’s ok with you, I’ll book the test for the day after
tomorrow. I’ll keep a close eye on her in this shift. If anything seems out of the ordinary with her,

I’ll call you.
Dr. Nicky : That sounds like a good plan.
