Language Focus

Reported speech is used when people want to tell someone what someone said. We usually use a
reporting verb (e.g. say, tell, ask, etc.) and then change the tense of what was actually said in
direct speech. Here are the examples:

Direct speech Reported speech
" I had a pneumonia two years ago." She said (that) she had had a pneumonia two
years ago.
" I take aspirin everyday for my arthritis." She said (that) she took aspirin everyday for
her arthritis.
