Language Focus: Maintaining Privacy and Asking for Consent



                Keeping the area private

                •  "I’m going to close the curtain/door to make sure your privacy is fully protected."
                •  "I’ll cover the rest of your body with a blanket so only the necessary area is exposed."
                •  "I’ll make sure you're covered as much as possible throughout the procedure."
                •  "Only the area we need will be uncovered, and I’ll be quick and careful."
                •  "If you would prefer to have a family member or companion with you during the procedure, I can
                    arrange that.”
                •  “Would you like/wish someone to stay with you?"
                •  “Are you expecting someone to come for you?”

                  Assisting patient to undress

                •  "I’m going to help you lower your pants and undergarments now if that’s okay."
                •  “May/Do you mind if I untie your gown for you?”
                •  "If you can lift your hips slightly, I’ll assist with pulling down your clothes."
                •  "We’ll only uncover the lower part of your body to keep you comfortable."
                •  "Would you be able to undress yourself?”
                •  “Do you need assistance with your dress?”
                •  “Take your time, and let me know if you need any help with undressing."


                  Assisting patient to dress

                •  "Now that we’re done, I’m going to help you get dressed again."
                •  "If you can lift your hips once more, I’ll pull your clothes back up for you."
                •  "Let me adjust your clothing so you’re comfortable."
                •  “Would you like me to help you get dressed?”
                •  "Feel free to take your time getting dressed” .
                •  “I’ll be here to help if you need it."


                  Positioning patient

                •  "Let me help you get into position. Can you lift your hips a bit, or would you like some help?"
                •  "Do you mind if I help you adjust your hips to make sure it is in the right spot?”
                •  “Should I adjust the bed’s rail controller so you can be in a sitting position?”
                •  “I’ll help you rest your back on the bed’s headboard so you can be in a sitting position.”
                •  I’ll place a cushion here so you can rest your back more comfortably.”
                •  "Would you lie on your left side and bend your knees slightly to make this more comfortable?"
                •  "If it’s more comfortable, you can keep your lower leg straight and just bend the top one toward your
                    chest."
