At the end of this lesson, you must be able to:
1 .explain transport mechanisms in cells (diffusion, facilitated
diffusion, osmosis, acve transport) and
2 .differenate exocytosis and endocytosis.
The cell membrane controls the movement of molecules into and out
of the cell. For cells to survive, food parcles, water and other materials must
enter the cell and waste materials must be able to leave the cell. This crical
funcon of the cell membrane is made possible by its selective permeability,
meaning that certain substances can freely pass through the cell membrane,
some are transported across, and others are prohibited from entering or
leaving. Essenally, substances move into the cell in one of three ways: passive
transport, acve transport, or bulk transport.
