Understanding the Software Development Life Cycle — IT Certificate

            Functional Teams

Functional teams are composed of SMEs, and are created to provide specific expertise for projects.
They provide expertise in a variety of areas, including system integration, system software,
databases, and testing, and present role-based skills and knowledge needed for benefits or payroll.

The primary purpose of the functional team is to complete assigned project tasks for the overall
project plan. Functional teams may expand or decrease in membership as assigned project tasks are
completed. Once the functional team has completed its assigned tasks, it may be dissolved, and new
teams may be created to address new tasks throughout the life of the project.

TOPIC 3: SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT LIFE CYCLE PHASES

            Overview

The SDLC consists of the following set of phases, each of which utilizes the results of the previous
            phase to support the next.

            Initiation

The initiation phase begins when a sponsor identifies a need or an opportunity. A concept proposal
            is then created.

An outcome of this phase is a project charter proposal, which is approved by the project team and
            steering committee.

            Systems Concept Development

During the systems concept development phase, the scope or boundary of the concept is defined.

The scope or boundary of the concept should include:
            • Systems boundary document.
            • Cost-benefit analysis.
            • Risk management plan.
