Understanding the Software Development Life Cycle — IT Certificate

Outcomes of this phase typically include:
            • The tracking log, which will note defects that are either remediated immediately or after the
               launch period.
            • A defect prioritized tracking log.
o This tracking log will also note defects that are remediated, both immediately and after
the launch period. Since the defects are prioritized, the project team may accept that
some defects are of low priority and not within the scope of the current project. Defect
remediation can occur through program corrections, post-launch corrections, or a
manual process that compensates for system defects.
            • Business approval that the system is working as intended and is ready for movement to
               production.

One significant point to note is that during the user acceptance testing (UAT), the change control
process becomes more rigid. All identified defects should be logged following the organization’s
            SDLC process for testing.

            Implementation

            The implementation phase includes:

            • Implementation preparation, including development of technical and user standard operating
procedures (SOPs) and instructional manuals, finalization of change tickets, and completed
training for IT and business users.
            • Implementation of the system into a production environment.
            • Resolution of problems identified in the integration and testing phases.
            • The outcome of this phase is a working system in production.

During the first few weeks of the launch period, there is usually a period of stabilization where
system defects could occur. Any defects are processed through the organization’s standard change
            control process.

Although post-implementation is not a phase unto itself, it is a suite of activities that is performed
after implementation is complete and before the start of routine operations and maintenance.

During post-implementation, descriptions of tasks for operating and maintaining information
systems in a production environment are established. Post-implementation and in-process reviews
            are included as well.

            Outcomes of post-implementation include:
            • Refinement of technical and user SOPs and instructional manuals.
            • Complete the system stabilization during the post implementation period.
            • Perform a post-mortem assessment on the project identifying outstanding issues, missing
functionality and over all opportunities for improvement on future initiatives.
