Shortening and reinforcing ropes








               When you want to shorten a rope without cutting it, you can use the sheep
               shank.  This  knot  can  also  be  used  to  temporarily  “isolate”  damage  to  the
               rope. A version that can be used to quickly “repair” a damaged rope is the
               overhand loop. But remember that a knot always weakens a line.

               Note that this works well when the rope is streched at both ends. If you lash
               the parts together with a thinner line. as in illustration 5. the knot will hold
               better. Tie the sheep shank like this:
