President’s Message
NCPS OFFICERS
2021-2022 Shana Levy, MD
Officers
Shana Levy, MD - President Dear Colleagues,
Farah Zaidi, MD - President-Elect
Diana Wertz, MD, PhD - Vice President
Michael Ostacher, MD, MPH - Treasurer
Tara Collins, MD, MPH- Secretary The annual NCPS annual conference this
past month signals the last month of my
APA Assembly Representatives NCPS Presidency and that this is my last
Mel Blaustein, MD (21-25) President’s message. As such, my thoughts
Peter Forster, MD (20-24) about the future are especially pronounced.
Yelena Zalkina, MD (18-22) In May 2022, Dr. Farah Zaidi will begin her
Raymond Reyes, MD (19-23) term. I have no doubt that Dr. Zaidi will thrive in this role and NCPS
is lucky to have her leadership.
Past Presidents
Anna Glezer, MD I feel so grateful and honored to have had this experience as
Smita Das, MD, PhD, MPH President. In fact, I have sometimes slipped, and mistakenly called
my NCPS Presidency a Pregnancy. Though a funny, Freudian, slip of
Councilors tongue that makes me giggle when I say it, I recognize some
Richard Altesman, MD (19-22) similarities for me in the best of ways. Surrounded by a community
Sidney Edsall, MD (19-22) of encouragement and support, I found myself in a new role with
Emaya Anbalagan, MD (20-23) some expected challenges and joys, and some unfamiliar
Janet Baek, MD (20-23) experiences that stretched me, requiring a new place of balance and
Elizabeth Rawson, MD (21-24) at times, deep calming breaths.
Takeo Toyoshima, MD (21-24)
I learned novel ways to partner with members of my community to
Resident Councilors create collaborations and was reminded how essential these
John Kelsey, MD ~ CPMC connections are as we faced challenging times and complex, evolving
Jimmy He, MD ~ Kaiser Oakland social dynamics. I feel proud of my growth during my term, confident
Tomoki Kimura, MD ~ San Mateo that I have evolved and am ready and empowered to take on new
Ketetha Olengue, MD ~ Stanford roles, including supporting and mentoring others in their journeys.
Cynthia He, MD, PhD ~ UCSF
Habir Walia, DO ~ Kaiser Oakland For NCPS, it is again critical to look ahead. Recent and ongoing social
Jiaochen Ke, MD ~ San Mateo stresses such as: isolation, poverty, climate change, wars, inequality,
Benjamin Belai, MD ~ Stanford bias, stigma, political desperation, sexism, and elitism, etc. have
John “Connor” Barnhart, MD ~ USCF affected us all. These ongoing dynamics have the potential to
negatively affect those who can/cannot pursue medicine and then
Chapter Presidents psychiatry, and who can/cannot sustain and afford, both emotionally
James Eyerman, MD, DFAPA and practically, our vigorous training and post-residency life.
North Bay Counties
In short, I fear that there are many stressors that may further limit
Parliamentarian the diversity of who can, wants to, and stays in our incredible field.
Raymond Reyes, MD All of these factors have the potential to negatively impact what our
field becomes and restrict and diminish the positive impact it can
Communications Committee have on those with mental illness and their families.
Peter Forster, MD ~ Editor
Nina Cudney, MS ~ Writer NCPS has been resilient in large part because we support one
Nathanial Morris, MD another and continue to evolve and develop ways to encourage each
Adam Nelson, MD other's constructive efforts. As a community, it is essential to listen
Diana Wertz, MD to, join with, protect, and empower new voices. Our resilience was
clearly visible during the pandemic, and we need to stay dynamic and
PFNC President robust as we face the known and unanticipated internal challenges
Zena Potash, MD inherent in growth.
Executive Director It has been a goal of my NCPS Presidency to focus on the RFMS,
Maggie Furrow recruitment, mentorship, and training, including self-care and
psychotherapy, and to continue to strive for a more inclusive,
415-334-2418 | F:415-239-2533 | innovative community. I am inspired to do more.
