headlines leave us psychiatrists as a marginalized presence without a positive, therapeutic voice. This
diminishes our professional scope and opportunities to contribute directly as psychotherapists in
     interprofessional collaborations beyond medication.

What I love about our field is our invaluable training to think medically AND psychodynamically. I
encourage psychiatrists to seek more psychotherapy training, in whatever modality they choose, and
increase ways and types of mentorships and supervision. I encourage us to seek further opportunities to
educate our broader communities about psychiatry and what we do. I have found this type of
psychoeducation quite fun. In the past couple months, I have held events for businesses about emotional
wellness, “Ask the Expert about Mental Health “and “Feeling Management” in the business setting. I feel
that putting psychiatrists in the public eye has the potential to further decrease the stigma of mental
illness, increase community care AND enlarge the public views of who psychiatrists are. It’s a win-win.

I hope my musings inspire us to think together about next steps. Please reach out to NCPS anytime with
your ideas, collaborations and efforts so that we can better meet the needs of our community.

     Happy New Year.

     Warmly,
     Shana Levy

Thank you for great article and important topic! it. I and perhaps many can relate to more or less similar
experience(s). I also have received voice message with something along these lines but fortunately did not
have to go through this scary experience by one of our fellows whose story you shared, due to no direct
conversation. Thanks for sharing this topic and story. It increases awareness, gives a renewed sense of
belonging for us as a group (subgroup) and that we are not alone. – Farah Zaidi, MD
