 APPROACH
• Foltz Trucking and PRO Resources Plan Implementation:
Leveraging ownership’s direct involvement and working with the Foltz Trucking Safety Director allowed us to launch wellness initiatives along with their annual safety meeting.
• Foltz Trucking & PRO Resources Wellness Fair: Prior to the annual safety meeting we strategized and implemented several key wellness initiatives that effect nearly all truck drivers— ie; flu shots, BMI testing, blood pressure reading, weight loss, quit smoking plans, proper nutrition, heart health, mind body wellness, exercise programs, etc.
• Rewards & Recognition: Concluding the safety portion, Foltz Trucking members and the PRO Resources team awarded and recognized drivers for their accomplishments in front of their peers.
• Monthly Maintenance: During the time following the Safety and Wellness event the PRO Resources Team stayed in contact with the drivers offering wellness coaching calls to assist with a variety of challenges and driver goals prior to the next event.
RESULTS
38% of Drivers Contacted Their Doctor
“61 Is Too Young” was a wellness initiative implemented in 2012 by PRO Resources. According to the CDC life expectancy of a truck driver is only 61 years. A reminder to drivers to change their lifestyle to enjoy their retirement after their career. The program was met with great success as a poll survey reported 38% of drivers making an appointment with their physician as a result of the wellness s screening. With 83 percent of health fair participants stating they planned to
make a change using what they learned
at the safety & wellness event.
Driver Turn-over High — 97%
At Foltz Trucking It’s Low — 24%
In 2013 Foltz Trucking and PRO Resources were invited to talk at the (MTA) Minnesota Trucking Association annual event. PRO Resources presented our Safety and Wellness “Highway To Health” initiative. Tom Foltz
Safety Director presented an
overview of Foltz Truckings
operations during which he
reported (at the time) a 24% driver turn-over rate.
Foltz Trucking stated that in 2019 their driver turn-over was at 11% which included drivers that were retiring.
SINCE 1991
CONCLUSION
It takes an exceptional effort, in an extremely difficult industry, for ownership to get drivers to “buy in” to a culture of safety and wellness. But with some creativity and effective programs drivers turn form standing on the sidelines to getting into the game and making remarkable changes, those that not only change their life but build a legacy with the company that showed them they care.
