TOBACCO USE
POLICY
Hopess is a non-smoking facility. Residents and employees may smoke only in designated
smoking areas outside of the facilities.
PROCEDURE
1. There will be no smoking inside any Hopess building. Designated smoking areas will be
identified outside and all smoking by residents, visitors and staff will be restricted to those
areas.
2. There will be no smoking during meetings, even in the event the meeting occurs outdoors.
When possible, a smoke break may be taken to accommodate staff and residents during
long meetings. Resident’s may not miss groups or any other scheduled activity to smoke.
3. Staff and residents are responsible for the safe handling of lighters and smoking materials
and for the proper disposal of these materials.
4. In program components serving children, all smoking materials and lighters are to be kept
out of the reach of children. Children/Adolescents are not permitted to smoke.
5. Due to new Federal Laws, as of December 20th, 2019 anyone under the age of 21 is not
permitted to smoke any tobacco and tobacco related products. This includes nicotine
patches and vapors. Any unauthorized person using tobacco on the property will be asked
to leave the premises. This includes guests or family members.
6. “Designated Smoking Area” signs will be posted indicating where smoking is permitted.
7. The use of smokeless tobacco inside any Hopess building is prohibited. This includes
electronic cigarettes and vapors. No rolling tobacco and chewing tobacco.
8. Smoking is not permitted in any facility transportation vehicles.
9. Smoking area will be located appropriately to prevent re-circulation of smoke into the
facility and will not be in the direct path of entrances or breezeways into the buildings.
10. Combustible ashtrays or waste receptacles are not to be used in smoking areas and will be
fire safety approved. Ashtrays and butt receptacles will be emptied regularly to prevent
ash buildup and to reduce the risk of fire.
