“Buying and Selling”:
Alternative Fuel Choice Simulation

Grade(s): 9-12

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:
    ? Compare/contrast, as well as make distinctions,
         between five (5) different fuels
    ? Understand the impact that vehicle and
         fuel choice has on;
              o The environment
              o Lifestyle
              o The economy/personal finances
    ? Use critical thinking skills to support the multi-step decision making used in buying
         a vehicle

Overview

Students are introduced to a total of six (6) different fuel sources including: conventional
gasoline, biodiesel, ethanol, electricity, hydrogen, and compressed natural gas.

Following the introduction,
students are divided into one of
two roles: buyers or sellers. The
“seller” students will represent one
of the categories of fuel and will
try to sell the vehicles that utilize
these fuel types to the other
students. They will receive an
informational card that describes
the details of the fuel that they will
be trying to sell which will include
information such as price, fuel
efficiency, and vehicle
size/seating capacity. The
students are encouraged to be
scientific, creative, and
persuasive in their salesmanship of
their vehicles.
