        which I did, alone, as he instructed.

                Just before Christmas, I received a Christmas gift, like all the
        management members in Dhahran, from Fred Davies. It was a bushel
        basket full of a variety of kinds of liquor. Veigh Neilson’s wife, Janet,
        sent me a box of homemade cookies. It was very thoughtful and kind of
        her, but by the time the box got to me, it had been opened and sampled

        practices, I tossed the cookies in the wastebasket, but sent Janet a note of
        thanks. It was a lonely Christmas. The weather turned cool and we had
        a couple of short rainstorms that left puddles in the street. The weather
        was cold enough, a couple nights, that there was actually a thin cover of
        ice over such puddles. That was the coldest weather I ever saw in Ara-
        bia.

        to assess my performance in his absence. According to him, they were

            signment, would be increased to $800.

        b.  I would be promoted three grades in the salary structure.

        c.  I would be made eligible for family housing immediately.
        d.  I would be allowed to return to the States to get Jean and the kids
            and bring them back with me. This trip would be dressed up as a
            recruiting trip because I would be asked to go to San Francisco and
            Los Angeles to try and recruit more fellows with job evaluation ex-
            perience.

               My new job would be Superintendent of the Organization and
