years they had discovered and were soon producing oil and were on
        their way. Mr. Mac regaled us with stories from his career. It was an
        unforgettable afternoon.

               In late September of 1954, Jean and I decided to take an ex-
        tended “Local Vacation.” We took two weeks of our Long Vacation and
        added this to the two weeks of normal Local Vacation. Jean and I went
        WR %HLUXW EULHÀ\ DQG WKHQ WR ,VWDQEXO  :H KLUHG D 7XUNLVK JXLGH ZKR
        was well known among the Americans. He had traveled all over the
        world with some famous people as their guide. He took us on a boat
        trip through the Bosporus up to the Black Sea. We were interested in the
        huge mosques in Istanbul. Most of all, we enjoyed a day at Topkapi, the
        national museum. At that time, half the museum was open on alternate
        days. We were most interested in gifts the various ruling Sultans had
        received from other rulers around the world. Who would have though
        that an exhibit of porcelain china would be that interesting, but it was!

        We were driven into Vienna to a lovely old hotel (the Bristol) where
        we enjoyed a deep, hot bath. That night we went out to a Hungarian
        restaurant where the food was great and we were serenaded by strolling
        musicians. We then went window-shopping among the lovely displays
        RI VWRUHV  ,W ZDV FRPSOHWHO\ GL൵HUHQW IURP WKH 0LGGOH (DVW  ,W UDLQHG

        lightly, but we ignored it. It was a fantastic evening.
               We  went  sightseeing  in  Vienna  for  a  few  days. At  that  time
        Austria was occupied with separate zones assigned to Russian, French,
        British and American groups. I started to take a picture of a beautiful
        building with a red star over it, which was the Russian headquarters.
        A Russian sentry pointed a Tommy gun at me. No picture!  Despite the
        various zones, we were able to travel around the city in taxis and public
        WUDQVSRUWDWLRQ  7KH DUFKLWHFWXUH LQ WKH EXLOGLQJV ZDV PDJQL¿FHQW  :H
        went to one great restaurant (the Inn of the White Hussar), which was
        400 years old. The Viennese make an art of the decoration of pastries
        and candies. Some of them looked too pretty to eat – but we ate them
