We found that the pineapples in Ceylon were far sweeter that the
ones we were used to from Hawaii. The bananas were also very good. In

of fresh fruit in Arabia, it was great!

After a couple of days we began a tour of other areas in Ceylon.
In Kandy we visited the Temple of the Tooth. The feature there is a tooth
that is supposed to have belonged to Buddha. I had a question as to its
authenticity – the tooth was big enough to have belonged to a horse! At
Peradeniya we toured a marvelous arboretum that had been developed
by the British people, nearly all of whom had left Ceylon. They had a

commanded British forces in the India and Burma campaigns of World
War II. One day we saw a fruit peddler beside the road and stopped to

we had ever seen. A large, very-slow moving river runs through the
city and it is deep enough for large-size freight ships to enter from the
ocean and unload there. We had a most interesting trip on a small boat
that went up the river. All forms of life took place there. We took 16mm

We were astonished to see women washing clothes in the muddy river
and then seeing such clothes hanging sparkling clean and white on the
clothesline. We passed a boat-building yard where men were sawing
huge tree trunks by hand with a horizontal saw going back and forth be-
tween either side of the tree trunk. The river was a highway to the entire
