society. There were small boats that rode only a few inches above the
water, which were open-air delicatessens. Clients would stop by in their
little boats barely above the water. Occasionally we would pass small
boats loaded with fresh produce on its way to market.

In Hong Kong, we stayed on the Kowloon side at the Peninsula
Hotel. No lovelier hotel exists. It faces on the waterfront looking out
on Hong Kong Island. After registering, we were taken to a room. The
hall was T-shaped and there was a double-desk at the juncture where
two white uniformed Chinese men sat. As soon as we had examined
the rooms, we left to go a block away to a Chinese tailor shop. At this
time, Hong Kong tailoring had become famous in Arabia. With Jean’s
college training and subsequent work experience (for her girls), she had

soon involved in selecting material for a car coat for Richard and a suit
for me. Jean and Janet were looking at materials to be used for them. Af-
ter a few minutes, Jean asked, “Where’s Cindi?” The rest of us thought
she was in and around one of the stacks of material. Jean glanced around
and decided that Cindi was gone. She ran down and asked clerks on the

into the Peninsula Hotel. There she found Cindi with an English woman
who had found Cindi walking down the sidewalk. The woman had im-
mediately sensed that something was wrong. Fortunately, she had taken
Cindi into the hotel thinking that Cindi had simply wandered out of the
lobby. Jean immediately took Cindi up to our room and spanked her for
walking away from us – then Jean burst into tears. In the meantime, I
