outdoors together. Initially, we felt we wanted a home that would be
wrapped around a central garden. Ken Cardwell wisely talked us out of
this idea on the basis that a fully enclosed court would be a heat and air
trap. We compromised by having a garden court about 80 percent en-

of it. Ken Cardwell sited the house very well on the lot. His design
of roof overhangs combined with the sitting allowed the winter sun to
come in through the glass walls of the family room because the sun is
low in the sky, whereas the overhanging eaves block the summer sun.

Jean worked hard on design aspects using cross section paper
that she would then take to Ken Cardwell to discuss. She used cutouts

proved their value over and over again. For example, there were pullout
shelves to be stepped on so that children could gain access to china in
the cabinets. She did the same thing so that young children could step up
and have easier access to the washbowls in the bathroom. The electric
food mixer was situated on a board, which slid under the cutting table
near the kitchen sink so that it was completely out of the way when not
in use. In the corner of the kitchen, she designed shelving which would
utilize the dead space in the corner. Jean did a wonderful job.

In our rental home in Sunset Village, Jean had mahogany chests
of drawers built that we were able to utilize during our 16 months there.
When we built our house these same chests were installed in the house
in bedroom closets so that bedroom space was free for ready rearrange-
        ment.
When the house design was complete, it was put out for bid for
construction. We had seen a couple of homes built by Mr. Francis Fini-
gan in our general neighborhood. We had inspected the construction,

on Finigan being allowed to bid on our house over some objections by
the architect. When the bids were opened, Finigan was clearly lower in
