The wedding reception was held in a lovely building on East South
Temple. The family found something for each of us boys to do during
the reception. My assignment was to open the big front door as guests
approached. I recall opening it for Governor Dern, who lived a few
blocks away on South Temple and had simply walked to the reception.
The next day, Laurine and Grant left by train for Philadelphia, where
they rented an apartment and Grant enrolled in the University of Penn-
        sylvania Medical School.
I recall that our family now seemed much smaller with Laurine
and Edge gone. June was in LDS High School, Sam in Junior High
and Gord and I in Washington School. Our home had a happy rhythm.
Everyone rose in the morning without having to be awakened. Dad was

hair and dressed. I never in my life saw my Mother in a housecoat or
dressing gown or looking dowdy. We all ate breakfast that Mother had
prepared. She was a strong believer in Cream of Wheat cereal, so we
had that several mornings a week. Dad normally drove home from the
Capitol Building for lunch. Dinner was at 6 p.m. In the afternoon we
kids might be out playing or working or whatever, but we all knew we
were expected to be home, have our faces and hands washed and be
ready to sit down at the table for dinner at 6 p.m. We always ate as a

On Saturday, Dad worked until 1 p.m. About half the time he
would drive home, pick up Mother and they would go “up-town” shop-
ping. We boys all had Saturday chores. Sam, for example, would scrub

Dad got home from work. Dad never physically punished us or berated
us for failure to complete a chore – he simply looked disappointed. We
