an IRA. For the next ten years, we lived on the proceeds from the Ar-
amco pension plan and the Chevron stock plan. I invested the proceeds
of the Chevron pension plan in a self directed IRA. Taking the “cash

years of personal hell in not having the opportunity to show what I could
do, but from Chevron Research days onward there was a steady rise to
close to the top of the corporate ladder.

Before I retired from Chevron I had worked hard – arriving
at 7:30, pushing myself all day long and usually leaving around 5:30,

to seven. Before that, I commuted by Greyhound bus, which was much
longer and unreliable. Ironically, when I retired, my job was split – and
two managers replaced me! I have kidded with friends by saying: “one
of the highest compliments a company can give you is to replace you,
upon your retirement, with two managers to perform the same work.”
