The heavens declare the glory of God
At the start of 2024, I asked Jack Apperley of Epsom Chamber
Choir whether I could write a piece for them. This was
enthusiastically accepted, and it was decided to include it in
the Autumn concert together with the masses by Stravinsky
and Bruckner. What a privilege to be named alongside such
well-known composers! The masses required ensembles of
woodwind and brass. So, a further advantage was I had these
accompanying musicians at my disposal. I took as my text the
first few verses of Psalm 19. This has been put to music
before, most notably by Haydn in his Creation. However, I
felt I could bring a different feel to it – one of amazement at
God’s creative powers displayed in the Universe. The world
premiere was very well received:
“….Peter captured the essence of the Psalmists’ words in
music which expressed awe and wonder through a series of
luminous chords before growing to a soaring climax”.
