Complementary and alternative medicine or CAM also refer as western
medicine or modern medicine which is a category of medicine that includes a
variety of treatment approaches that fall outside the realm of conventional
medicine. There is a great need to increase the researches for establishing the
safety and efficacy of such medicine. National Center for Complementary and
Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) recently surveyed Americans on their use of
complementary and alternative medicine. The survey, which gathered
information from more than 20,000 adults and nearly 10,000 children, found that
about 40% of adults and 12 % of children use some form of complementary and
alternative medicine. Women ages from 40 to 60, and adults with higher levels
of education and income tended to use complementary and alternative therapies
more frequently. There have been considerable increases in the number of
people using common forms of complementary and alternative medicine, such
as yoga, meditation, acupuncture, and massage therapy.
