3. Alternative therapy
   A non-mainstream medicine is used as a substitute for traditional medicine or
   used in place of mainstream medicine.
   Example for Alternative therapy
   A patient with cancer chooses to be treated with specific dietary changes instead
   of receiving chemotherapy.

4. Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM).

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)
defines complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) as ―a group of diverse
medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently
considered to be part of conventional medicine.‖

                                                Or

(CAM) is a treatment or a therapy that is applied alongside and in support of
conventional medical methods.

5. Integrative medicine (IM)

(IM) is a combination of mainstream medical therapies and CAM therapies for
which there is some high-quality scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness.

Principles underlying alternative healing:

While a disparate array of alternative therapies and healing systems fall under the
umbrella term ―CAM,‖ what they typically have in common are fundamental
principles of health and healing. These principles are not unique to CAM
(conventional medicine subscribes to some), nor do all CAM therapies embrace
them equally. Taken together, however, they provide a framework for
understanding CAM approaches to healing that contrast with the biomedical model
of care. Many CAM therapeutic systems emphasize some or all of the following
