EFFECT OF DEFORESTATION IN TASIK CHINI
Biodiversity lost
• Rainforests are home to thousands of unique species of plants and
animals. Loss of natural rainforest threatens rare species with
extinction, some of which could have potential benefits to humanity.
• U. punctata is a sensitive indicator species which prefers
oligotrophic black waters, hence was one of the first species to
disappear when Chini experienced environmental changes.
• Tourists wishing to see the famed annual lotus blooms, there is none
to view now. The decline population of Neumbo nucifera seem
reducing the eco-tourism factors and it is believe that was it caused
by the rapid spread of macrophyte called Cabomba furcate.
• 30% decline in the variety of fish in the lake. Even the toman (a
hardy carnivorous fish) is difficult to spot now. Futhermore, species
like the jelawat, belida and kelisa are also no longer present in the
lake
• Decline migration of birds
• The lost of flora and fauna will effect the food chain of Tasik Chini.
