Dear Readers,
At JSW Cement, it has always been our endeavour to discuss with you on the key issues which are effecting us
community & development of Nation. In this issue we would like to address Global warming, natural resource depletion
& how Green products used in construction works, can make development of our Nation more sustainable.
Concrete is a primary construction material of the modern age, with over 13 billion metric tons used Globally every year.
It is a man-made material with a great impact on the economy and environment. Cement is the key binding material for
concrete. Strength, durability, ease of placement, economy and impact of environment should be considered, while
designing & execution of concrete works. Glad to let you know Portland Slag Cement (PSC) of JSW cement has been
awarded with EPD certification (Environment product declaration) in line with EN 15804 (EPD no S-P-01414 dated
2019/10/11), as Global warming potential of this product is amongst one of the lowest in Industry. This along with Green
Procertification by CII-IGBC, makes JSW cement products to be the most sustainable and environment friendly
products in Indian cement Industry.
Traditionally, Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) concrete is used for making the load bearing structures. Portland cement
can be replaced by Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS). GGBS is manufactured out of blast furnace slag,
which is non-metallic and non-hazardous product. It is rapidly quenched & ground into very fine reactive particles,
having high glassy content. GGBS has both hydraulic & siliceous property. The cementitious properties of blast furnace
slag were discovered in the late 19th century and it has been widely used in cement& concrete manufacturing works, for
over 100 years. GGBS is used in concrete, either as a separate cementitious component or as part of blended cement. It
works synergistically with ground Portland clinker in cement to increase strength, reduce permeability, improve
resistance to different chemical attacks and inhibit steel bars corrosion. Slag cement can be used in virtually all
concrete applications. It also helps to reduce the “urban heat island” effect by making concrete lighter in colour,
enabling it to reflect more light, cooling structures and pavements with exposed concrete.
Use of slag Cement in concrete reduces the environmental impact of concrete, by reducing greenhouse gas emissions;
ex Carbon di oxide by more than 50%. The products of Granulated Slag are regarded as environment friendly and durable
materials, that can protect the environment, by limiting the exploitation of natural resources and reduce the amount
of energy consumed during cement production process, which helps to achieve sustainability in construction.
We from the house of JSW cement, thank you all, for the continuous support extended to us during past years & with the
commitment to grow together in future, will surely have a better World to live in, though the pledges of our combined
Green initiatives .
