What will I learn for Junior Cycle Music?
> Music for Junior Cycle music is based on three components:
Listening, Composing and Performing.
> Music theory – how to read and write music.
> Exploring various styles of music such as Classical, Irish Traditional, Jazz, Pop and ethnic music.
> Learning about the History of music and famous composers.
> Listening to music and analysing structures and identifying elements of music within the piece.
> Learning how to compose music.
> Learning how to prepare a performance for the practical exam.
> Learning the ukulele and tin whistle from scratch or improve your skills on these instruments.
Students learn how to choose pieces and perform them on any instrument that are studying
outside of school.
> Learning how to sing and play together as a choir and group.
> Learning how to develop confidence in performing.
> Learning about music technology/software – recording techniques.
Who would this subject suit?
This subject suits all levels and abilities, especially those with a creative outlook and imagination.
Whilst it is useful that a student has some knowledge of how to play an instrument or sing before they
take Music, a musical and disciplined student could learn an instrument or how to sing from scratch in
1st year.
What is the Junior Cycle Music Exam like?
> The Listening/theory paper is 70% of the exam.
> A practical performance of 3 pieces on any instrument or voice (either solo or in a group) is 30% of
the exam. The standard is based on 3 years class - based tuition.
> For Classroom based assessment 1 in 2nd yr., students submit two original compositions in any
style in a written, visual, digital or audio format.
> For Classroom Based Assessment 2 in 3rd yr., students prepare a Programme note on the pieces
they will perform in their practical exam. A Programme note contains background information
about their pieces.
Progression after Junior Cycle
Study Music at Leaving Cert level, it is preferable that a student has taken music at Junior Cycle level.
However, if a student is very musical and highly motivated, it could be possible to take it at Senior
level after consultation with the music teacher.
