What will I learn in German class?
You will learn how to have a conversation in German on everyday topics such
as your family, where you live, your hobbies etc. You will also be able to listen to
German CD’s and read texts and understand how other people your age lives in
German speaking countries.
Who would this subject suit?
This subject will suit anyone who wants to learn about other people in other countries and how they
live.
What is the Junior Cycle exam like?
The Junior Cycle exam is made up of 2 Classroom Based Assessments (CBAs) and a written exam. The
first Classroom Based Assessment is held in 2nd year and the second one is in 3rd year. The written
exam is held at the end of 3rd year.
Type of Homework
Homework is varied, it can take the form of a written, audio or project task.
Is Learning German like anything what I did in Primary School?
German is a language like English or Irish, or indeed any language you may speak already. The
grammar and vocabulary will be different but like any language, the more you practice, the more
confident you become in speaking it.
Progression after the Junior Cycle
You will continue to study German after the Junior Cycle in Transition Year, 5th & 6th year. At the end of
6th year, you will be able to sit the Leaving Certificate exam.
Careers Note
Students who leave third level with a language as part of their degree are highly sought after by
employers. You can also study in Germany for a year as part of the degree program in university
(Erasmus Program).
German is particularly useful if you want a career in business, banking, medical, science, education,
translation and tourism, as well as many other areas. You will also find modern languages useful in
your personal life for travelling etc.
