Students will learn to draw from observation. They will learn the
skills and techniques associated with drawing, painting, 3d sculpture,
lino and fabric printing, photography, digital art, interior design, fashion design. Students
will learn to express themselves and their own, individual ideas which boosts self – esteem.
Students will learn problem solving through developing their ideas into finished artwork.
Students will learn to be innovative, take risks and develop the courage, confidence and a
willingness to fail and try again.

                  Who would this subject suit?
This subject suits all levels and abilities, especially those with a creative, curious outlook and
imagination. An ability to draw is helpful but not essential as this is something that can be developed
                  over time.

What is the Junior Cycle Exam like?
The Junior Cert Art exam is a class-based project which is completed in two parts during class time.
The first part (CBA1) is completed in second year from January - May in 2nd year. The second (CBA2)
is completed in third year from September - May. They develop their ideas in a SEC workbook and
complete 2 finished pieces. These components are graded by the SEC. Workbook - 50%. Finished
                  artefacts - 50%.

                  Type of Homework
Homework is based on projects that they are undertaking in class.
Their homework involves research, experimenting, exploring and developing ideas.

Is learning Art anything like what I did in primary school?
In secondary school, students research and develop ideas before completing a piece of work. They
learn to draw from observation rather than from memory as can be the case in primary school.
Students learn to develop and perfect the creative skills they may have been introduced to in primary
school. Most, but not all of our students, have been exposed to Art in primary school but this is not a
requirement. A love of art, creativity and self-expression are the best reasons to choose Art as a subject
                  in secondary school.

                  Progression after the Junior Cycle
While it is not compulsory for students to have studied Junior Cycle Art to
choose Art at Leaving Cert level, it would be an advantage. Breakdown
of Leaving Cert Art: 50% Project, 20% - Practical Exam and 30%
Written Exam. The project component will start in term 2 of
6th year and will take a similar format to the junior cycle
project work. The practical exam will take place in a single day
and last approximately 5 hours. The written exam will happen
during the Leaving Cert state exams and will be approximately a 2.5
                  hour exam.
