The Younger Dr. Peter to the New Imperfect But Improved Version
Here is a story about why I have waited almost four decades to create this program:
When I was a young psychologist I was very inhluenced by one of my philosophy professors — Dr. David Cernic. He taught a course called “The Philosophy of Love” and he taught it from a number of points of view. He taught how Freudian notions of love were rooted in the narcissistic process of loving in others what we love in ourselves. He taught about romantic, optimistic views on love. He taught about pessimistic, nihilistic views of the illusion of love. The thing I loved about the way he taught was that one day you would hear him lecture and be convinced that love was the center of meaning of human existence. You could hloat out of class intoxicated with the promise of hinding true love. Ahhhhhhhh. The next day you might walk out defeated and convinced that love was just an exercise in self stroking that leads to a life of cynicism and despair. Ughhhhh.
After I too became a professor, I had the good fortune to co-teach some seminars with Dave, where I would take the negative view and he would take the positive view. I got the dirty end of the stick in those days — the students always liked his view better than mine, but now I get to run the show all by myself albeit with the generous wisdom of my mentor on this topic.
