and disappointment so as we explore what it takes to manage disappointment in relationships we should pay close attention to how our “shoulds” feed into that disappointment by placing expectations on our partner that are unfair or irrational.
“I mean, what if her phone ran out of power?”
This takes away some of the tyranny.
“She should keep it charged.”
This brings the tyranny back.
Do Men and Women Think Differently?
Why yes they do, Kknowing full well that you can’t argue with a book... Why yes they do. The argument is often made that women are more complex emotional thinkers than men. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld once observed that the difference between men and women is that when a woman asks a man “What are you thinking about,” and the man says, “Nothing,” they are usually telling the truth! But for the purposes of our conversation we can say that there are individual differences if not gender differences concerning how our emotions are mediated by our thinking.
And what is also true is that when partners differ in how they express their emotions, adjustments might have to be made on the part of the individual who is more expressive:
