BOOK REVIEW
BOOKS READ DURING COVID TIME WIPS
I read many books during covid time, out of which one
book which has left deep impression on me is “ An uncer-
tain glory – India and its contradictions “ by Amartya
sen and Jean Dreze, which highlights the many comtem-
porary issues prevailing in Indian society like corruption,
social inequality, violence against women and democratic
reforms.
The book was an eye opener since it shows the exis-
tence of two worlds – one of privileged and the other
population lacking even the basic necessities. It talks
about how violence against women and draws attention
to aspects of gender discrimination, the callous attitude
of police and public to complaints of sexual violence and
harassment, which has been neglected for a long time.
After the post covid-19 crisis, this book made me realize
that timely and proper access to primary health care facili-
ty can create a healthy population who can contribute
actively to country’s growth. It is inspiring for me because
it motivates me to be more active in community partici-
pation and contribute in whatever way I can to the society – both as a doctor and citizen.
This book made me realize the stark reality that India faces so many social and economic
inequality. The authors have highlighted how skill education can signi cantly reduce the
inequality. As individuals we can do something for society. When one individual realizes the
impact they can have on other , it creates a better society and world.
The book talks about how conservative countries like Bangladesh, China made rapid
progress in living standards through agency of women by rapidly educating and involving
women in mainstream sector which leads to a more aware and literate family. This can lead
to expansion of basic education, health care, family planning service and increase labour force
participation rate in our country. IMF has predicted that if Indian women participate in labour
force our GDP can increase by almost 30%.
A more proactive participatory approach by every individual especially women is the need
of the hour. Kudambashree in kerala contributed actively by helping the frontline workers
during covid-19 pandemic.
The overarching theme of this book is to give greater attention to rights, needs of underpriv-
ileged people and women in public discussion and policy making. Women can play active role
in India’s growth and development by participating in economic activity. While some aspects
of social inequality in India has reduced, a lot more needs to be done to remove the social and
economic inequality.
