Helen’s baby was due in mid-December so Bob arranged to trade his call from that time to
call between Christmas and New Year’s so that he’d be free to attend the delivery. However, it
turned out the baby became 2 weeks overdue and Bob was on in-hospital call when Helen
went into labour. Arrangements had been made for Tom Disney to take Helen to St. Joseph’s
Hospital when the time came. The story is at the admission office they told Tom that he could
stay but he ran off, leaving Helen behind, and yelling “I’m not the father!” To be fair to Tom, he
was running out as planned to relieve Bob at MUMC who then sped to St. Joseph’s Hospital.
On Thursday, December 28, 1972 Helen delivered Geoffrey Robert Card, her third and
last child. Her family physician, Neil Finnie attended and Bob finally made it to one of the
births. No assassinations occurred in the next few months. However, 3 days later goalies
Worsley and Brown played in the last NHL hockey game ever where both goalies didn't wear
masks.
