Classmates Who Made an Impact
eds’ 63 had its share of fascinating individuals. One was Bal Mount, who faced immense challenges after
Mdeveloping cancer during medical school. Despite this, he persevered and became a leading figure in palliative care.
He authored a comprehensive 1,000-page book on the history of palliative care in Canada, published by McGill University
Press. I admired his resilience—at our reunion, he used a tracheotomy device to speak and eat but remained lively and
engaged with everyone. Another was Tanya Pietak, a long-time classmate and fellow medical student. There were also
Terry Porter and Dave Skene, who were stars of the Queen’s football team. Dave Skene married Joan Carr-Harris, a
member of my next medical school class, when I returned after my illness.
