Meeting Helen (September 18, 1960)
’ll never forget the day I met Helen, my future wife. It was September 18, 1960, at Macdonnell House, a Queen’s
IUniversity residence on Barrie Street. A mutual friend Gary Willard and I had stopped by as Garry’s sister, Nanci,
was staying there. By chance that evening I sat beside Helen. That meeting marked the beginning of our relationship. We
attended the Meds Formal that fall, and our bond grew stronger over time. Helen and I shared a wonderful life together
until her passing in 2020.
During the summer of 1961, I stayed in Kingston to work on a research project in the Physiology Department. This
marked the beginning of my interest in academic medicine. Meanwhile, Helen went back to her family farm. We wrote
each other daily, and she kept those letters in a ribbon-tied box. That summer was a special time, blending my budding
career and our deepening connection.
