ueens University in 1957 was small, with just about 2,000 students. That year marked the opening of its first men’s resi-
Qdence, McNeill House, where I stayed. I shared a double room with Peter Dunlop. Before that, male students lived in
boarding houses or quasi-fraternity-style housing since fraternities weren’t officially allowed.
Queens was a welcoming place, and I celebrated my 18th birthday during my first year there. Although I had been admitted
to medical school, the first year was more like a premedical program—essentially preparing students for what they needed
in medicine.
