n 1972, McMaster Dean John Evans suggested that with my expertise I should consider starting a new hematology
Iprogram elsewhere. He mentioned two possible locations: St. John’s, Newfoundland, and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Neither option appealed to me at first. I had never traveled west of Sault Ste. Marie or east of Montréal. Saskatoon felt
remote, and St. John’s seemed difficult to reach.
