The frequencies used in the emergency transmitters are the international
emergency frequency 121.5 MHz and/or 243.0 MHz and in certain cases where
there is a satellite monitoring system, 406 MHz.
12.1 Emergency transmitter testing
Turn on the flight radio and tune to 121.5 MHz (the only frequency we can test).
Then manually activate the emergency transmitter and hear if it is OK.
It is ok if you hear the siren sounds emitted.
TESTING EMERGENCY TRANSMITTERS:
1. Must take place within the first 5 minutes of each hour.
2. Must last no longer than 1 second or 3 sweeps.
3. Must take place on the ground
Position determination with 406 MHz is done via satellites and is accurate within
approx. 20 km
The system is called COSPAS/SARSAT and is a collaboration between several
countries.
12.2 Requirements for listening watch
When flying over the North Sea and Skagerak within Copenhagen FIR and when
flying in Sonderstrom FIR, continuous listening watch must be maintained on the
VHF emergency frequency 121.5 MHz
