5.11 Effects on the aircraft during landing and taxiing
An aircraft is exposed to great impacts during landing.
The impact comes partly from the actual landing of the aircraft but can also
come from the pilot not having completely straightened the aircraft in
connection with crosswinds.
This will cause lateral impacts on the landing gear.
In some cases, there is a difference between the weight the aircraft is allowed
to take off with and the maximum landing weight.
When landing, it is important that the landing of an aircraft with a nosewheel is
done on the main wheels first. The nosewheel then is lowered as the speed
decreases.
5.11.1 Landing in a crosswind
There are generally 2 methods for landing in a crosswind:
- the crab method
- the bank method
5.11.1.1 The crab method
With the crab method, you fly on final
with the aircraft's nose into the wind,
i.e. you enter the runway sideways.
Just before landing, the aircraft is
levelled in the direction of the runway
with the rudder and banked into the
wind to prevent the aircraft from
drifting to the left.
