Meteorology

Meteorological visibility in METAR/SPECI (the concepts will be explained later)

is reported according to the following criteria:

                   1. When visibility in different directions is significantly varying, the worst

visibility is given, followed by the direction to it (NE, S, SW, etc.). The
directional indicator is used only when visibility in the worst direction is

                      less than 5 km.

                   2. When the worst visibility is observed in more than one direction, the

direction indicating the operationally most important direction must be

                      specified.

                   3. When the worst visibility is less than 1500 meters, and visibility in another

direction is more than 5 km, both visibility values are reported along with

                      the directional indications.

                3.6.8.4 Visibility measurement

Visibility in METAR and SPECI is given as follows:

When visibility in different directions is significantly

varying, as shown here, where visibility is 6 km in all
directions except to the east, where visibility is only

2 km, the worst visibility is given, followed by the

                direction to it.

The MET VIS indicator here is: 2000E.

The indicator is used only when the worst visibility is below 5 km, and it

indicates the operationally most significant direction.

When the worst visibility is less than 1500 meters, and

visibility in another direction is more than 5 km, both
visibility values are given together with their

                directional indications.

The MET VIS indicator here is: 1200E 6000SW.
