Here is a typical intercom that allows communication in the cockpit without
being disturbed by the engine noise.
It is equipped with the functions SQ
(SQUELCH) and VOL (VOLUME).
SQ is a noise suppression system. If it is set incorrectly, you may hear engine noise
in your headset, or you may get no sound at all in your headset!
When set correctly, it helps to avoid the engine noise and the hiss that would be
present without noise reduction. The system ensures that only speech directly
into a microphone from our headsets is transmitted to the speakers in our
headsets.
The VOL adjustment allows us to choose an appropriate volume level.
1.1.2 Headsets
When we communicate via the intercom, we use headsets. Our headsets also
have the option to adjust the volume.
Here is the correct use of a headset.
Note that the microphone has the proper setting and
distance from the mouth. There is a foam cover over the
microphone that eliminates wind noise.
The microphone should be adjusted so that it is
perpendicular to the mouth; otherwise, it will not work
optimally.
1.1.3 COM-radio
With a correctly set up intercom and headset, we are equipped to establish two-
way communication with other radio stations.
To do this, we need a radio in the aircraft.
