final countdown to The Sound of Music

It is back, bigger and better!
Brought to you by the
Playhouse, the popular and
well-loved Sound of Music is once
again going to have you dancing,
singing and at the same time
sobbing at the story line.
To the thrill of many, the
production returns to the
Playhouse this November for a
run of more than a month till the
end of December 2016.
The Sound of Music taps into
our readiness to embrace victory
against the odds. The show tells
the tale of the Von Trapp family
and their journey of survival
amidst the Second World War
in Austria. A tomboy becomes a
governess in the Von Trapp home
with its seven children.
Craig Urbani plays Captain von
Trapp, the naval captain, who also
employs Maria Rainer to look
after his children after the death trained singer, Arline Jaftha, who

Finnie and Mark Bellingan, are
the brains behind BESETdurban. of Durban, with the view to
Jonas Barauss, a passionate
Durbanite, has recently joined
the team. Their goal is to
promote the idea that Durban’s
culture and built environment is
worth exploring. Every six to
eight weeks they intend to host
of his wife. Urbani is as huge as
they come. He starred in The
Buddy Holly Story in South Africa
and on London’s West End and
spent years working in Europe
and Asia. A winner of the Vita
and DALRO awards, Urbani has
been nominated for a Laurence
Olivier Award in London’s West
End, and decorated for his role as
Alec Mathews in SABC’s Isidingo.
In the show, with military
precision Von Trapp defends
through song and dance, the
sanity of his family. His marching
band includes the versatile Lynelle 10% discount for 10 to 19 people;
Kenned, who many may recall
as the runner up in the Top
Presenter search. Kenned plays
Maria Rainer, the musically gifted
governess who uses music to
bring hope in a time of despair.
The Pasella presenter has won the
prestigious 2015 Fleur du Cap
Award for Best Performance.
The kindly, understanding
Mother Abbess is played by opera-
free walks with expert speakers
who will talk about various
aspects of the built environment
break misconceptions.
The last walk saw
approximately 40 people
meeting at The Prep Room in
Bath Road, Durban, for the
Glenwood Coffee Walk 2.0 (A
previous walk with different
last impressed Durban audiences
in The Playhouse Company’s
Easter Concert.
By all accounts The Sound of
Music is highly recommended
family viewing for the holidays.
Tickets are R150, R180, R200
and R225 each if pre-booked,
and R170, R200, R220 and R245
at the door one hour before the
show. Students and pensioners
receive a discount of 30% off
the highest ticket price. Block

The first stop was The Bean
Green Coffee Company, a
roastery and coffee shop, in
Helen Joseph Road. Peter Winter
and his co owner, daughter Mel
Winter, import green coffee
beans from Ethiopia, which they
roast, blend, as well as package.
Bluff Bru is their signature
brand. Mel, twice barista of
the year in KwaZulu-Natal,
provided an insight into the
story behind The Bean Green
Coffee Company. She also
shared some background to
coffee making, including details
such as the correct number of
grams of coffee required to make
that perfect cup (you will have
to pay a visit to taste the coffee). worked up an appetite and we

Park. Here we met The Prep
Room owner and restaurant
expert, Judd Campbell, who
introduced us to his newest
venture. The Prep Room, which
is situated in the grounds of
Glenwood Preparatory School,
overlooks the playing fields.
Of note is that the restaurant
has been constructed from
five containers. Architect
Brandon Robertson provided
an entertaining description of
the challenges of building with
these containers – by no means
an inexpensive exercise in up-
cycling.
Following another cappuchino,
a slower walk was taken up
Alan Paton Road to the corner
of Cato Road, to reassemble at
The Coffee Tree, which is also
run by Judd Campbell. Another
opportunity to continue to enjoy
the caffeine fix for the morning,
along with the relaxing vibes
of the quaint venue. A range of
delicious eats is also available
here, including vegetarian and
gluten free options.
One more bout of walking –
back down the hill – had now
finished our morning testing The
Prep Room menu which caters
for a range of foodlovers’ tastes.
This included one salubrious
breakfast; free-range poached
eggs, streaky bacon, chargrilled
brinjal slices topped with
hollandaise and chives and one
hedonistic breakfast; mushroom,
tomatoes, refried beans, bacon,
pork banger, fried eggs and
bread – along with more coffee.
A good morning was had by
