FROM GOD BACK TO GOD
Remembering Padre
Fr. Perez loved to work on improving the campus grounds and gardens.
I rst met Fr. Perez in the winter of 1984. I was coaching the high school girls’ basketball team at Monte Cassino,
and we played our games with the Cascia Hall boys’ high school team, since we were both still one gender high schools. After our rst game (which we won), he approached me, introduced himself and asked me why I didn’t call more timeouts during our game. My response was.... who are you, and why is a guy barely ve feet tall trying to tell me how to coach basketball? We have been friends ever since. You see, Fr. Perez had a great sense of humor, and he loved to give people a hard time — he could take it as well as he dished it out. Here is a brief collection of some of the nick names he gave to several in our community:
A former student was named Folger ...
he called her Ms. Coffee.
A former student was named Ferrari ...
he called him Mr. Ford.
A former student was named Bell ... he called him Ding Dong.
A former outstanding tennis player ... he called her Super Woman.
Flunky – Counselor Debbie Coleman was given this name when she could not correctly give the capital of some obscure country he would quiz her on daily.
Malefactor – Athletic Director Thomas Perrault ... for obvious reasons.
Chicago Ma a – Augustinian priests who arrived at Cascia via Chicago.
He also loved to try to make Art teacher, Ms. Esther Sartain Pitcock, turn red ... never failed.
In return, he earned the nicknames of El Cid (recognizing his Spanish heritage) which adorned his golf cart, and cartoon character,Yosemite Sam, when he would get hopping mad. Of course my favorite was simply ... Padre.
I miss him each day and often grab his golf cart and take it for a spin around campus during ball games. I can see the disappointment in folk’s eyes when I pull up and they realize it is not Padre at the wheel ... sentiments I share.
