L to R: Fr. Bernie Scianna, Fr. John Gaffney, Fr. Bill Perez†, and Fr. Ted Tack† pose in front of the 75th Anniversary plaque listing the Augustinians who have served at Cascia Hall from 1926–2001. There are 97 names on the plaque; the addition of four names would bring it up-to-date to total 101 Augustinian priests and brothers who have served at Cascia Hall since its founding. The plaque, which is outside the principal’s office in the Upper School, was a gift from the Class of 2000.

Fr. Philip Cook
This past December, Fr. Philip Cook was awarded his Ph.D. in Classics (Greek and Latin) from the University of Florida, Gainesville. He successfully defended a dissertation entitled “Abandoning the City: Meaning and Identity in Lucan’s Rome,” which explored the importance of place/ home in shaping identity and the use which the poet Lucan makes of this dynamic in his opposition to Nero. Lucan would eventually die in a conspiracy to overthrow Nero in 65 AD.
Fr. Philip’s graduation in December was the culmination of many years of part- time study as he continued to preach and teach both at St. Rita H.S. in Chicago, and here at Cascia. He expresses his gratitude to Roger Carter and the community at CH for granting him the sabbatical last year in which to write. He hopes to continue to improve as a teacher and spend the next decade of his life in the study of forestry, French, or forensic anthropology!
Correction to notice in Winter Chronicle –
Fr. Philip Cook is not celebrating his 25th anniversary of ordination to priesthood this year but, rather, his 25th anniversary of profession as an Augustinian. His actual anniversary of priesthood will be in 2022.
